My First Photo Show!

My move to Praia was the first step toward living my dreams, both in terms of lifestyle and career, but it took a trip back to the States to kick start one of those dreams. I am so excited to report that my first photography show, which took place in Hartford on Thursday evening, December 13th, was a success. The crowd was robust and refreshingly varied and the energy was great. And I am proud to say I sold a good deal more than my target number of framed prints and notecards. But, much more meaningful to me than sales was hearing the reactions to my photos and realizing that almost every piece hanging on the wall was somebody’s favorite. The highlight of the night happened early on. As I entered the main room fifteen minutes before the event was slated to begin, a camera flashed. I was so worried about making sure everything was ready before guests started arriving that I didn’t pay it much attention. My dad told me to turn around, and when I did I was facing Ron Barboza, the most famous Cape Verdean photographer and a hero of mine. My eyes filled with tears and I gave him a huge hug. I mean, the Ron Barboza had come all the way from New Bedford, Massachusetts to be at my little event. And not only was he the first to arrive and one of the last to leave, he also shot my event! To say that I was humbled would be an understatement.I was also touched by how many people pitched in to help me make it happen: Crystal, Jenna, Jade, Michelle, Auntie Roni, Auntie Onni, Auntie Lorraine, Auntie Laney, Stacey H. and my amazing parents who let this event consume their lives and homes for well over a week.

A pivotal moment for me was being approached by an entering guest and asked, “Are you the artist?” The question caught me off guard and I almost responded with a quick, “No.” Then I thought, Oh shit, yes. That’s me. I’m the artist. I’m an artist. It was an “aha” moment for sure. But as my mom, whose idea it was to have the show, recently told me, I must own it.

Now that I’ve returned to my home of Praia (yup – it now feels like home), I have lots of work to look forward to. Work that I love and find fulfilling. And my mom, newly dubbed my “Momager” will be “stateside” handling the orders that continue to come in. Life is good. No – life is great!

It’s A Man’s World

Boys rule when it comes to design.  Classic menswear is no longer stuck on his side of the closet.  Pinstripe, plaid, chevron, herringbone and houndstooth patterns on flannel, linen, twill, wool and tweed are HOT and can be seen all over the home – and I don’t mean only in the library or office.  Here are some of my favs…
