My first exhibition in Cabo Verde was poignant for me because, well, it was in Cabo Verde, the country of my ancestors, the country I now call home, the country I adore. It was also a special night because my exhibition was a joint event alongside a launch for the groundbreaking Capeverdean Creole-English Dictionary which features some of my photographs. The crowd included many quasi-family members, friends and colleagues and even the country’s first and current prime ministers attended and enjoyed. More important than photograph and book sales was the support and love that the Dictionary team and I received. Oh what a night!
Proud to say this new site for Cabo Verde’s National Forum of Transformation II (organized by the Center of Political Strategies) includes many of my photos:
No need to scroll through – excluding the staff head shots, here are the pics they chose…
My photography show at the Cape Verdean Progressive Center in East Providence, Rhode Island was, for me, like coming back home. Although I was raised in Connecticut, I was born in Providence and much of my family has always been based there, so Providence has always been my second home. It is also where I would go to refill on doses of my Cape Verdean American culture which, thanks to my parents’ upbringing, has always been very important to me. On October 6th, so many people who are dear to me came out to see my work, to see me and to see each other, as well as to support Cape Verde for Life. The energy and love in the room were overwhelming. It was truly a night to remember.
